WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND – SEPT 17-20

With so much grabbing for your attention and dollars these days, it’s easy to miss when the latest releases are heading to a cinema near you. So come back every week as we here at So, Is It Any Good? preview the new movies hitting screens.

This weekend audiences can take in the adrenalin rush of Everest or take the family to the movies as Oddball and Blinky Bill: The Movie arrive in time for school holidays.

Everest

Rating: M

Starring: Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Emily Watson, Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Jake Gyllenhaal

Synopsis: EVEREST is the dramatic true story of a team of climbers who found hope, strength and triumph in the wake of tragedy. Their successful ascent of Mount Everest just days after fellow mountaineers and friends died there, is a compelling story about the human spirit and a mountain they love, respect and sometimes fear.

Why you should be interested: Coming in at No.14 on our Best Films Yet To Be Come In 2015 list, this has been one to watch since the very first trailers appeared. A true story of heroism and survival against insurmountable odds combined with white knuckle, on-the-edge-of-your-seat excitement, this should tick many boxes for action movie fans. The camera work looks incredible, and the cast is pretty stellar too, so this would get my $20 this weekend.

Who should see it: Adventurous cinema-goers

Oddball

Rating: G

Starring: Stuart McDonald, Alan Tudyk, Sarah Snook, Deborah Mailman, Shane Jacobson

Synopsis: The story of Allan “Swampy” Marsh and his Maremma dog Oddball. Swampy convinced local authorities to allow Oddball to protect a colony of Little Penguins on Middle Island from wild cats and dogs. Oddball succeeds in his campaign and becomes a front runner for Maremma dogs being used to protect other endangered Australian wildlife.

Why you should be interested: Looking to take a page out of the Red Dog play-book (and no doubt hoping to replicate it’s success), here comes another true life tale of a larrikin dog who does something great for their town. The trailer is a bit silly, complete with requisite dog mayhem and fart jokes, so it’ll be strictly family audiences who’ll get a kick out of this I think. If you didn’t like Red Dog however, maybe skip this and rent Inside Out for the kids instead.

Who should see it: Dog and/or penguin lovers

Blinky Bill: The Movie

Rating: G

Starring: Ryan Kwanten, Toni Collette, Barry Humphries, Richard Roxburgh

Synopsis: Blinky Bill is a little koala with a big imagination. An adventurer at heart, he dreams of leaving the little town of Green Patch and following in his missing father’s footsteps.

Why you should be interested: The little grey Aussie icon gets another adaptation and a shiny CGI animation makeover in this latest tale. I’m digging the animation style, but they’re laying on the Aussie-isms pretty thick, and like Oddball, this one looks like it’s strictly for the kids. It is nice to see the local industry embracing new techniques and storytelling forms however, so you’ve got to give some credit for that.

Who should see it: True blue Aussie kids
