INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE – TRAILER

Without warning, and without a stupid trailer “teaser” (thankfully), 20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for the sequel to 1996’s Independence Day, subtitled Resurgence.

Not many details are obvious (yay for not telling the whole story in the trailer!), but in the wake of the first movie’s events, the nations of the world seemed to have used their technology to strengthen our defences. But wait, back come the aliens and this time they’re pissed!

The pleasures of this trailer are almost too many to count; Jeff Goldblum, back to bring his weird nervous energy to another blockbuster (it’s been too long), Bill Pullman, always the better Bill in my opinion, who seems to be taking the crazy route this time (too many alien dreams), there’s giant alien ships, Judd Hirsch on a boat, and even a damn moon base! No Will Smith for this outing, he’s too busy being a real actor, but they’ve subbed in Jessie Usher as his son. Also adding eye candy for the younger demos is the omnipresent Liam Hemsworth, who will no doubt have his shirt off at some point.

I was sceptical when they announced this movie, especially without Smith, but from the looks of this they seem to have kept the flavour of the original, and except for the actors aging, it almost seems as though no time has passed. Could be a winner.

INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE will invade Australia on June 23, 2016
