Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!
That was very dark for a Cars film. 
Cars 3 sees the return of Lightning McQueen, but this time he isn’t so agile as he once was, now trying the to climb back up the ladder and be number 1 once again. This is very much a Rocky Balboa story but set in the Cars universe. If you were turned off the franchise from the previous entry, this might tickle your fancy.
My kid watches these films like the world might end, at this point even if the third film was about Lightning’s adventures to the toilet, it would be far more entertaining then having to watch the first 2 entries another 3000 times.
