‘Wonder Woman’ Becomes The Highest Grossing Super-Hero Origin Film Ever

You’ve seen it, you’ve loved it, you’ve felt empowered by it. Now lap up the glorious news that Patty Jenkins’ bad arse DCU origin film Wonder Woman has overtaken Spiderman (2002) to become the highest-grossing superhero origin film to date.

According to Box Office Mojo, the Amazonian princess/demigod is currently sitting at the top of the pile for money made at the box office during its international theatrical release, crossing the USD $800 million threshold overnight.

While rankings are all well and good, we can at least rest easy knowing that apart from being an all around excellent film, Wonder Woman has also surpassed Suicide Squad, which despite being the cinematic equivalent of a bag of stale farts, still managed to rake in a phenomenal USD$746 Million worldwide.

As far as rankings go for all superhero genre films, this places Wonder Woman at #7 for top grossing superhero films of all time.

So what does all this mean? I’m no expert but if we could have some more money funnelled into strong female lead action films, that’d be ace. Ladies like movies too you guys, who’d have thought?! We’ll have to wait at least another 18 months until we see another Diana-centric story on our screens, with Wonder Woman 2 slated for a December 2019 release. Until then, here’s hoping that Justice League kicks just as much butt.

Are you looking forward to the Wonder Woman sequel, or worried that it couldn’t possibly live up to the hype? Sound off in the comments below, or don’t; I’m not your mum.
