This weekend: Bat-ffleck trades in the cape for a calculator in The Accountant, Mad Mel Gibson is back exposing the horrors of war with Hacksaw Ridge, Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander look longingly at The Light Between Oceans, and the kids get a treat with the animated Robinson Crusoe: A Wild Life.

The Accountant

theaccountantposterRating: MA15+

Starring: Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, Jon Bernthal

Synopsis: A forensic accountant un-cooks the books for illicit clients.

OUR VERDICT

Trailer:

Why you should care: By most metrics the best thing about Batman v. Superman, Affleck has been riding high on his clout as a director, and his foray into the DC universe donning the Batman cowl. It seems that confidence is letting him make some left field choices because this is a very different role for him. I’m liking the change though, and this looks to be a tight and economical little thriller.

Who should see itBourne action lovers

Hacksaw Ridge

hacksawridgeposterRating: MA15+

Starring: Andrew Garfield, Teresa Palmer, Sam Worthington

Synopsis: The extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) who, in Okinawa at the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without carrying a gun.

OUR VERDICT

Trailer:

Why you should care: How do you make a movie about war when your main character doesn’t carry a weapon?!? An interesting slant on the time-tested war movie, it’s got a great cast, and the directorial hand of Gibson has never looked so assured. Riveting.

Who should see it: Pacifists and patriots alike

The Light Between Oceans

lightbetweenoceansposterRating: M

Starring: Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Rachel Weisz

Synopsis: A lighthouse keeper and his wife living off the coast of Western Australia raise a baby they rescue from an adrift rowboat.

Trailer:

Why you should care: This one looks heavy. But when you have so many pretty people to look at, it can’t be that hard a slog can it? I’m joking, this is not going to be an easy watch (so many feels!), but the caliber of actors in this makes me think you’ll be in safe hands if you’re up for it.

Who should see it: Dramatics

Robinson Crusoe: The Wild Life

robinsoncrusoeposterRating: MA15+

Starring: Yuri Lowenthal, David Howard Thornton, Laila Berzins

Synopsis: On a tiny exotic island, Tuesday, an outgoing parrot lives with his quirky animal friends in paradise. However, Tuesday can’t stop dreaming about discovering the world. After a violent storm, Tuesday and his friends wake up to find a strange creature on the beach: Robinson Crusoe. Tuesday immediately views Crusoe as his ticket off the island to explore new lands. Likewise, Crusoe soon realizes that the key to surviving on the island is through the help of Tuesday and the other animals…

Why you should care: I’m not the next Pixar movie, but this Belgian import might just keep the kids entertained for an hour or so. There’s enough talking animals to sink an ark, and as long as they make fart jokes, the little ones will be happy.

Who should see it: Strickly for the kids
