What To Watch This Weekend – Sept 29 – Oct 2

With so much grabbing for your attention and dollars these days, it’s easy to miss when the latest releases are heading to a cinema near you. So come back every week as we here at So, Is It Any Good? preview the new movies hitting screens, and give you the lowdown on what to watch this weekend.

This weekend: Event Cinemas’ In The House sessions continue with the ’91 Ice Cube classic Boyz N The Hood, saddle up for a shootout with The Magnificent Seven, and we discover the wonders found in Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children.

In The House: Boyz N The Hood

boysnthehoodposterWhere: Event Cinemas George St Sydney

When: Friday, September 29th at 7pm

Rating: MA15+

Starring: Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr., Laurence Fishburne, Morris Chestnut

Synopsis: Follows the lives of three young males living in the Crenshaw ghetto of Los Angeles, dissecting questions of race, relationships, violence and future prospects.

Trailer:

Why you should care: John Singleton’s 1991 ode to the Ghetto is strangely as topical as ever, given everything that’s in the news at the moment, so now seems like the right time for Event Cinema’s In The House sessions to revisit it. Featuring Ice Cube’s first film role, and Cuba Gooding Jnr before he got all “Show me the money!”, Boyz N The Hood is a searing account of a world not many in Australia would know.

Who should see it: Classic Cube fans

The Magnificent Seven

magsevenposterRating: M

Starring: Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Byung-Hun Lee and Peter Sarsgaard

Synopsis: With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue, the desperate townspeople employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers & hired guns. As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.

Why you should care: Remaking a classic is always a tricky business, and director Antoine Fuqua has done himself no favours by choosing to remake one of the quintessential movies of the Western genre, a genre that has also been Box Office poison lately (I’m looking at you Lone Ranger). If he’s gonna do it though, you can be glad that he’s assembled an awesome cast, including the always reliable Washington and Chris Pratt, currently riding a hot streak after Jurassic World. It looks heavy on the action and the quipy humour, so that ticks the boxes for me.

Who should see it: Denzel devotees, Pratt fanciers, and wannabe gunslingers

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

missperegrinesposterRating: M

Starring: Eva Green, Samuel L. Jackson, Asa Butterfield

Synopsis: When Jacob discovers clues to a mystery that spans different worlds and times, he finds Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. But the mystery and danger deepen as he gets to know the residents and learns about their special powers.

OUR VERDICT

Trailer:

Why you should care: A Tim Burton film without Johnny Depp? What!? Stranger things have happened, and by the looks of it, there’s enough Burton weirdness going on here that you won’t even miss him. Flying girls, creepy twins, scary-as-shit Sam Jackson… it’s a menagerie of weird. Fans of the book will be excited to see the characters brought to life, and if you’re in the mood for something a bit lighter, but don’t want to see Storks or The Secret Life Of Pets, this could be the ticket.

Who should see it: Book and Burton buffs
