Inferno

infernoposterRating: M

Starring: Tom Hanks, Felicity Jones

Synopsis: When Langdon wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia, he teams up with Sienna Brooks, a doctor he hopes will help him recover his memories. Together, they race across Europe and against the clock to stop a madman from unleashing a global virus that would wipe out half of the world’s population.

Trailer:

Why you should care: The third movie based on the Dan Brown novels featuring Robert Langdon, it’s another high stakes world-spanning, clock ticking, brain bender. Tom Hanks is always reliably good, but after 2 movies as Langdon I still get the feeling that he’s miscast in the role. We get a new European ingenue for this movie, Rogue One‘s Felicity Jones, who should bring a spark to the proceedings. This is pulp action adventure, literally the movie version of an airport thriller, and my guess is it’ll fade in your memory pretty soon after the lights come up.

Who should see it: Those on the Dan Brown bandwagon

Masterminds

mastermindsposterRating: M

Starring: Kristen Wiig, Zach Galifianakis, Kate McKinnon, Jason Sudeikis & Owen Wilson

Synopsis: A night guard at an armored car company in the Southern U.S. organizes one of the biggest bank heists in American history.

Trailer:

Why you should care: Napoleon Dynamite writer/director Jared Hess returns after a long hiatus with this comedy that’s been sitting on the shelf since 2014. Part of me thinks it probably should’ve stayed there. Stacked to the top with grade-A comedic talent though it may be, there’s nothing here that shows the spark of Dynamite. It all seems very been there, done that. If you’re really in the mood for a laugh and can’t find another option, maybe try this one for a chuckle.

Who should see it: The comedy-starved

Skiptrace

skiptraceposterRating: M

Starring: Jackie Chan, Johnny Knoxville, Bingbing Fan

Synopsis: Hong Kong detective Bennie Chan has been tracking notorious crime boss Matador -whom he believes to be businessman, Victor Wong for over a decade after he kills Bennie’s partner Yung. When Yung’s daughter Samantha gets into trouble with Wong’s crime syndicate, Bennie must track down an American conman, Connor Watts, who gambles his way through Chinese casinos after being banned in America & is now witness to a murder in Wong’s Macau casino.

Trailer:

Why you should care: Is it just me, or does this seem like a reverse Rush Hour? Making full use of that Chinese backing money, this sees Jackie Chan return to the kind of roles that he found great success in (Hour, Shanghai Noon). The buddy in this comedy is the Jackass himself, Johnny Knoxville, who’s been pretty quiet on the movie front as well lately. He can do this role in his sleep at this point (see every movie he’s been in), and Jackie must just be doing it for the exercise at this point.

Who should see itRush Hour fanatics
