WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND – OCT 1-4

With so much grabbing for your attention and dollars these days, it’s easy to miss when the latest releases are heading to a cinema near you. So come back every week as we here at So, Is It Any Good? preview the new movies hitting screens.

This weekend, Matt Damon gets marooned on the Red Planet in The Martian, and Robert DeNiro gets marooned in a rom-com without the rom in The Intern.

The Martian

the-martian-posterRating: M

Starring: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kristen Wiig

Synopsis: During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.

Our Verdict

Trailer:

Why you should be interested: No, it’s not the origin story of Marvin The Martian (although I would see that movie). Director Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner) makes a seemingly triumphant return to the space genre after the much-maligned Prometheus failed to live up to expectations. Add in a great premise and an all-star cast and it’s easy to see why it made No. 4 on our Best Films Yet To Come in 2015 list. The reviews (including ours, see above) have so far been glowing, and the trailers promise a healthy dose of action, suspense, all laced with great humour. Matt Damon is definitely the one you want to be stranded on a planet with.

*It was also filmed in real 3D, so a session with the glasses might be on the cards if you’re into that kind of thing.

Who should see it: Anyone who wants to get lost…. in a great movie

The Intern

244582Rating: M

Starring: Robert DeNiro, Anne Hathaway, Rene Russo, Adam DeVine

Synopsis: 70-year-old widower Ben Whittaker (Robert DeNiro) has discovered that retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway).

Trailer:

Why you should be interested: DeNiro and Hathaway are always watchable, and director Nancy Meyers has become synonymous with these types of comedies featuring older Hollywood legends showing that they’re just as vibrant as the youngsters (see Something’s Gotta Give and It’s Complicated). So expect lots of old jokes, ridiculous homes/businesses that nobody could ever afford, and to probably forget this soon after you leave the cinema. It’ll be nice while you’re there though…

Who should see it: Meyers trained rom-com junkies
