What To Watch This Weekend – Nov 17-20

With so much grabbing for your attention and dollars these days, it’s easy to miss when the latest releases are heading to a cinema near you. So come back every week as we here at So, Is It Any Good? preview the new movies hitting screens, and give you the lowdown on what to watch this weekend.

This weekend we get fantastic, and dive back into J.K Rowling’s Wizarding World with Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, Alexander Skarsgaard and Michael Pena wage a War On Everyone, and Morgan gives us HAL 9000 for a new millenium.

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them

fantasticposterRating: M

Starring: Eddie Redmayne, Ezra Miller, Katherine Waterston, Zoë Kravitz

Synopsis: The adventures of writer Newt Scamander in New York’s secret community of witches and wizards seventy years before Harry Potter reads his book in school.

Trailer:

Why you should care: Harry Potter fans have been champing at the bit to get another magical trip and J.K Rowling herself pens this tale set 70 years before the boy who lived picked up the textbook on which it’s based. The cast is top-shelf, and David Yates (director of the last four Potter movies) provides an experienced hand in this fantastical world. If it’s anywhere near as good as Potter’s adventures, muggles will be in for a treat. Expecto a good time.

Who should see it: Wizards and non-maj’s alike

War On Everyone

waroneveryoneposterRating: MA15+

Starring: Alexander Skarsgård, Michael Peña, Tessa Thompson, Theo James

Synopsis: Corrupt cops Terry and Bob break the law for a living in New Mexico. After the crooked pair come up against criminal kingpin, things get very, very personal. No longer just about the money, Terry and Bob put everything on the line in this politically incorrect, bad cop-bad cop black comedy.

Trailer:

Why you should care: This shares so much in common with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Nice Guys, that you’d be forgiven for thinking that Shane Black was behind this too. He isn’t, but Irish director John Michael McDonagh may as well be a brother from another mother, his script and direction seem to have the same spark. The leads look to be having a ball, and it’s nice to see Alexander Skarsgård breaking free from having to play the mopey pretty boy character he played on True Blood. This looks like a rollicking good time.

Who should see it: Bad boys and girls

Morgan

morganRating: MA15+

Starring: Kate Mara, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Paul Giamatti

Synopsis: A corporate risk-management consultant has to decide and determine whether or not to terminate an artificial being’s life that was made in a laboratory environment.

Trailer:

Why you should care: Cinema is full of warnings about the evils of artificial intelligence, but this one ups the ante for the new millennium. Cue lots of unsettling moments and jump scares. If you’re in the mood for a bit of a fright, this is really the only option around. Never underestimate the creepiness of children!

Who should see it: Intelligent beings, artificial or otherwise
