Here’s what to watch!

Hidden Figures

Rating: PG

Starring: Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe

Synopsis: A team of African-American women provide NASA with important mathematical data needed to launch the program’s first successful space missions.

OUR VERDICT

Trailer:

Why you should care: Nominated for 3 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress, Hidden Figures has been charming critics and audiences alike since it’s debut. We’re getting it later than most, and just in time for you to finish your Oscar viewing before the big night. The performances look strong across the board, and it’s an interesting angle to take on the well-worn space genre.

Who should see it: Space cadets and barrier busters

The Great Wall

Rating: M

Starring: Matt Damon, Willem Dafoe, Pedro Pascal

Synopsis: A mystery centered around the construction of the Great Wall of China.

OUR VERDICT

Trailer:

Why you should care: Not your typical Matt Damon movie, this one has “it’ll be massive in China” written all over it. I’m not sure about its prospects in the rest of the world, though, it looks a little cheesy. The dialogue is oddly stilted and although the action and effects look pretty decent, I just don’t see it gelling into a must watch film.

Who should see it: Damon devotees and wall enthusiasts

Silence

Rating: MA15+

Starring: Adam Driver, Liam Neeson, Andrew Garfield

Synopsis: In the seventeenth century, two Jesuit priests face violence and persecution when they travel to Japan to locate their mentor and propagate Christianity.

Trailer:

Why you should care: One of the many “should’ve been a contender” movies that were snubbed by Oscar, Martin Scorcese’s ten-year passion project finally comes to the big screen. The cast is starry and the premise is intriguing, but this isn’t a breezy Saturday night date movie. Go for the masterclass in directing and performance, but be willing to do the hard yards, cause it won’t be easy viewing.

Who should see it: Quiet Scorcese fans

Trespass Against Us

Rating: MA15+

Starring: Michael Fassbender, Brendan Gleeson, Lyndsey Marshal

Synopsis: A man looks to find a way to escape the criminal ways of his outlaw family.

Trailer:

Why you should care: This looks a bit like the drama version of the Brad Pitt scenes in Snatch doesn’t it? The cast is superb, Gleeson and Fassbender are rarely bad, and the setting is distinctive enough to set this apart from the countless other man-trying-to-go-straight films. Could be a winner.

Who should see it: Fass Freaks
