This weekend, The Jungle Book claws it’s way into all states, Shailene Woodley fights for the future in Allegiant, and Melissa McCarthy shows who’s The Boss.

The Jungle Book

The Jungle Book PosterRating: PG

Synopsis: Mowgli is a human boy raised by the Indian wolves Raksha & Akela ever since he was a baby & brought to them by Bagheera the black panther. When the fearsome Bengal tiger Shere Khan threatens his life since man isn’t allowed in the jungle, Mowgli leaves his jungle home. Guided by Bagheera & Baloo the bear, he sets out on a journey of self-discovery while evading the man-hunting Shere Khan. Why you should care: If you weren’t in one of the states that headed to the Jungle early, you might want to catch it as it rolls out nationwide. The reviews are stellar (currently at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes), and by all accounts it delivers on the thrills and especially the visuals.

Who should see it: Those down for a Jungle boogie

The Divergent Series: Allegiant

AllegiantRating: M

Starring: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Zoë Kravitz

Synopsis: The action-packed third instalment of the blockbuster Divergent series, Allegiant takes Tris & Four into a new world, far more dangerous than ever before. After the earth-shattering revelations of Insurgent, Tris & Four travel beyond the wall enclosing Chicago to seek out a peaceful solution for their fractured city. Once outside, old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless with the revelation of shocking new truths.

Why you should care: Now three movies into a four movie series, the Divergent series has never been able to shake it’s branding as a lesser Hunger Games, and by the looks of this one it’s unlikely to do that anytime soon. The cast is pretty strong (they’ve managed to get some great actors in Naomi Watts, Jeff Daniels, and Kate Winslet), and Shailene Woodley makes for a commanding if subdued lead, but it all seems to patched together from other, better post apocalyptic action movies.

Who should see it: The chosen ones

The Boss

TheBossRating: MA15+

Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Bell, Peter Dinklage and Kathy Bates

Synopsis: A titan of industry is sent to prison after she’s caught for insider trading. When she emerges ready to rebrand herself as America’s latest sweetheart, not everyone she screwed over is so quick to forgive and forget.

Why you should care: The most reliable female comedy draw of the last 5 years, Melissa McCarthy has made a name for herself with her quick-witted, filthy and physical humour. The Boss seems like another dip in that well, which should please her fan-base, but as intermittently funny as it might be it feels like McCarthy should be doing something different at this point. Luckily she’s got a chance to show us that when she reunites with Bridesmaids co-horts Kristen Wiig and director Paul Feig for GhostbustersUntil then, this might be good to tickle your funny bone.

Who should see it: McCarthy-ites

Last weekend, The Huntsman cometh to slay all rivals. But did he achieve his goal?

AUSTRALIAN BOX OFFICE – APRIL 7-10BOX OFFICE SHOWDOWN - AUSTRALIA APR 7

Well Mr Hemsworth and the Evil Queens only just squeaked past the school holiday powered Zootopia for the top spot $2.7 vs. $2.6 million. For the Huntsman, the decision to drop Snow White for the sequel meant a 50+% drop from the opener of the first movie – more Queens does not equal more box office it seems.

Batman v. Superman fell another 55% for a 3rd place finish with another $2 million for the Batvault. The rest of the Top 10 was pretty static, apart from The Eye In The Sky, which continues to find it’s target in limited release, only dipping a scant 6% and bringing in another $286K from 55 screens. Rounding out the Top 10, quirky Icelandic drama Rams rounded up the best per screen average in the top tier ($7444) from 17 screens for a $126K total.
