What To Watch This Weekend – Apr 13-17

With so much grabbing for your attention and dollars these days, it’s easy to miss when the latest releases are heading to a cinema near you. So come back every week as we here at So, Is It Any Good? preview the new movies hitting screens, and give you the lowdown on what to watch this weekend.

This weekend, rev up with Dom and the gang as The Fate Of The Furious screeches in to slay all at the box office race, if you’re not in the mood for cars, try to survive Anne Hathaway’s monstrous hangover in Colossal, or search for the truth in the Holocaust-denier drama Denial.

Here’s what to watch!

The Fate Of The Furious

Rating: M

Starring: Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Charlize Theron, Jason Statham, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Kurt Russell, Helen Mirren

Synopsis: Now that Dom (Vin Diesel) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) are on their honeymoon, Brian and Mia have retired from the game, and the rest of the crew has been exonerated, the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman seduces Dom back into a world of crime that he can’t seem to escape, the crew will face trials that will test them as never before.

Trailer:

Why you should care: What do you say when talking about the eighth movie in a franchise? This series has become wildly popular (defying all odds), so if you’ve seen the title and the trailer you’ve probably already made up your minds. Expect lots of ridiculous stunt driving, a whole heap of dialogue about “family” and enough star wattage to carry you through the whole thing. I personally just want to see Helen Mirren behind the wheel!

Who should see it: Furious car nuts

Colossal

Rating: M

Starring: Anne Hathaway & Jason Sudeikis

Synopsis: A woman discovers that severe catastrophic events are somehow connected to the mental breakdown from which she’s suffering.

Trailer:

Why you should care: This has got to be one of the most inventive movies of the year. We’ve all had the hangover from hell, but imagine if it manifested itself as a giant kaiju monster?!? The cast is great, and it’s good to see Anne Hathaway stretching out of that rom-com box that she’s so comfortable in, she is always at her best when she’s doing something different. And this is about as different as it gets!

Who should see it: Party monsters

Denial

Rating: PG

Starring: Rachel Weisz, Andrew Scott, Timothy Spall

Synopsis: Acclaimed writer and historian Deborah E. Lipstadt must battle for historical truth to prove the Holocaust actually occurred when David Irving, a renowned denier, sues her for libel.

Trailer:

Why you should care: It’s a tricky and emotionally charged subject matter, but the cast is uniformly excellent and as long as this doesn’t become black and white and preachy, this should be a thought-provoking drama to satisfy your serious moviegoing needs this weekened.

Who should see it: Dramatic cinemagoers
