What To Watch This Weekend – May 4-7

With so much grabbing for your attention and dollars these days, it’s easy to miss when the latest releases are heading to a cinema near you. So come back every week as we here at So, Is It Any Good? preview the new movies hitting screens, and give you the lowdown on what to watch this weekend.

May the Fourth be with you! As we head into another weekend you might still be tempted by Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy (we think they’re pretty good) or there’s a brand new quartet of releases to satisfy all comers. Jordan Peele wants you to Get Out and see his new horror flick, Dennis Quaid tangos with a pup looking for A Dog’s Purpose, Jessica Chastain fights to save animals and people as The Zookeeper’s Wife, and the quest to find the truth about Jesus makes The Case For Christ.

Here’s what to watch!

Get Out

Rating: MA15+

Starring: Allison Williams, Lakeith Stanfield, Catherine Keener

Synopsis: A young African-American man visits his Caucasian girlfriend’s mysterious family estate.

Trailer:

Why you should care: The less said about this one the better. Just know that it’s equal parts funny and creepy, and that Jordan Peele has the chops to give you goosebumps. Strap in for a hell of a ride.

Who should see it: Fright fans of all colours

A Dog’s Purpose

Rating: PG

Starring: Britt Robertson, Dennis Quaid, Josh Gad

Synopsis: A dog looks to discover his purpose in life over the course of several lifetimes and owners.

Trailer:

Why you should care: One for the pooch lovers, who don’t mind a side helping a schmaltz. This is going to wear it’s heart on it’s sleeve, but at least they’re upfront about it, unlike how they sold Marley And Me like Beethoven and then pulled the rug out from under you. Damn you Marley! Anyway… bring some tissues, just in case.

Who should see it: Dog devotees

The Zookeeper’s Wife

Rating: M

Starring: Jessica Chastain, Daniel Brühl

Synopsis: The Zookeeper’s Wife tells the account of keepers of the Warsaw Zoo, Antonina and Jan Zabinski, who helped save hundreds of people and animals during the Nazi invasion.

Trailer:

Why you should care: Just when you thought there wasn’t a new twist on the Holocaust/WWII drama, then they go add animals and a zoo to the mix. It sounds like an amazing story, and the cast is anchored by the always on point Chastain, but the trailer feels like it hits all the expected notes of a movie like this and it comes across a bit like Schindler’s Zoo. If that’s something you’re into, grab a ticket.

Who should see it: Zoophiles

The Case For Christ

Rating: PG

Starring: Mike Vogel, Erika Christensen, Faye Dunaway

Synopsis: A hard-driving journalist, Lee Strobel was exactly where he expected to be at work: on top. His award-winning investigative reporting recently earned him a promotion to legal editor at the Chicago Tribune. But things weren’t going nearly as well at home where his wife Leslie’s newfound faith in Christ went against everything Lee believed—or didn’t believe—as an avowed atheist.

Trailer:

Why you should care: I’m not a religious person by any means, but amongst the glut of religious movies that we seem to get every year this seems a tad more interesting. It must be the journalism angle, I’m a sucker for the All The President’s Men/Spotlight vibe. I probably still won’t see it, but if you like your religion with a side order of skepticism, then this might be your ticket this weekend.

Who should see it: Truth seekers
