With so much grabbing for your attention and dollars these days, it’s easy to miss when the latest releases are heading to a cinema near you. So come back every week as we here at So, Is It Any Good? preview the new movies hitting screens, and give you the lowdown on what to watch this weekend.
As we head into the new weekend, hit the streets with the roughed up, gritty King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword, go out in a hail of bullets with John Wick: Chapter 2, race against time to find The Osiris Child, or fight injustice with Don’t Tell.

King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword
Rating: M
Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Jude Law, Annabelle Wallis
Synopsis: When the child Arthur’s father is murdered, Vortigern (Jude Law), Arthur’s uncle, seizes the crown. Robbed of his birthright and with no idea who he truly is, Arthur (Charlie Hunnam) comes up the hard way in the back alleys of the city. But once he pulls the sword from the stone, his life is turned upside down and he is forced to acknowledge his true legacy…whether he likes it or not.

Why you should care: This has Guy Ritchie written all over it, it may as well be called Lock, Stock And One Glinting Sword. I dig Ritchie’s style of directing, and he’s played with period before in the Sherlock Holmes movies, but this is his first shot at a medieval epic and it’s a big swing. Three questions: a) can Charlie Hunnam pull this off, b) will this come off as a bit goofy with all the mystical elements, and c) in a Game Of Thrones world, does anyone care about King Arthur and his knights anymore?
Who should see it: Knight nuts
John Wick: Chapter 2
Rating: MA15+
Starring: Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Laurence Fishburne
Synopsis: Legendary hitman John Wick is forced to back out of retirement by a former associate plotting to seize control of a shadowy international assassins’ guild. Bound by a blood oath to help him, John travels to Rome where he squares off against some of the world’s deadliest killers.

Why you should care: About fucking time! The rest of the world got this in February, but here we are waiting until May. Keanu Reeves is back in the role that fits him like a second skin, and if the action is even half as good as last time, this will still be better than any other action flick you see this year. I know large portions of the audience have probably already pirated this, but if you are a true fan please see this in the theatres, it’s the only way to get the next sequel down here sooner.
Who should see it: Action addicts
The Osiris Child: Science Fiction Vol. 1
Rating: MA15+
Starring: Kellan Lutz, Daniel MacPherson, Luke Ford, Isabel Lucas, Temuera Morrison and Rachel Griffiths
Synopsis: Set in the future in a time of interplanetary colonisation, Sy (Kellan Lutz), a mysterious drifter, meets Kane (Daniel MacPherson), a lieutenant working for an off-world military contractor, EXOR. The unlikely pair must work together to rescue Kane’s young daughter (Teagan Croft) and reach safety amid an impending global crisis which was brought on by EXOR itself.

Why you should care: This Aussie sci-fi flick wears its influences on its sleeve (shades of Mad Max, Serenity, and others) but doesn’t look half bad! The effects look decent enough, and although I’m not really sure what it’s about, or what the deal with the weird subtitle is, you have to applaud local filmmakers that are thinking outside the box and budget limitations of Australian cinema.
Who should see it: If you’re Mad about sci-fi
Don’t Tell
Rating: M
Starring: Jack Thompson, Aden Young, Rachel Griffiths, Sara West, Jacqueline McKenzie, Gyton Grantley, Susie Porter
Synopsis: The story of a young woman who fought back after enduring sexual abuse at a prestigious private school. With a dogged and determined local lawyer by her side, Lyndal takes on the powerful church that denied her abuse for over a decade. Based on true events that changed Australian child protection laws, Don’t Tell is a poignant story about finding the courage to stand up, speak out and fight against injustice.

Why you should care: This looks like heavy going, but the cast is strong and if they treat the subject matter right they could end up with something really powerful. Not one to turn your brain off too though, for that, look elsewhere.
Who should see it: Truth tellers
