OUR VERDICT

Why you should care: Switch off your brain and strap yourself in for some world devastating action. If you’re a fan of the first Independence Day you’re exactly the target audience for this sequel. It plays out exactly as you’d expect, but if you’re like me, you’ll be grinning from ear to ear the whole time.

Who should see it: Fans of a close encounter

Ice Age: Collision Course

IceAge5PosterRating: G

Starring: Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Seann William Scott, Simon Pegg, Jennifer Lopez, Queen Latifah, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Jessie J

Synopsis: Scrat’s epic pursuit of the elusive acorn catapults him into the universe where he accidentally sets off a series of cosmic events that transform and threaten the Ice Age World. To save themselves, Sid, Manny, Diego, and the rest of the herd must leave their home and embark on a quest full of comedy and adventure, travelling to exotic new lands and encountering a host of colourful new characters.

Why you should care: I honestly can’t believe that this series is 5 movies in. I don’t think I’ve even seen the first sequel, let alone the last one, so I’m definitely not the target audience. I appreciate the animation style of these movies, but they’ve always come off as sub-par when compared to the continued genius of Pixar. As a diversion for the kiddies on a Saturday though, it’s probably a safe bet. Just don’t go in with high expectations yourself.

Who should see it: The young-ins

Everybody Wants Some!!

EverybodyWantsSomePosterRating: MA15+

Starring: Zoey Deutch, Blake Jenner, Tyler Hoechlin

Synopsis: A group of college baseball players navigate their way through the freedoms and responsibilities of unsupervised adulthood.

Trailer:

Why you should care: Coming off a career high in Boyhood, Richard Linklater is returning to the ground that he knows best, sprawling character studies about youth. A spiritual sequel to Dazed And ConfusedEverybody Wants Some!! looks at a new era (the 80’s) and a new chapter in a young person’s life, heading to college. I don’t think there’s any cross-over with characters from Dazed, but if you liked that classic, this should fit you like a snug baseball tee.

Who should see it: The dazed, and slightly confused.
