What To Watch This Weekend – June 2-5

With so much grabbing for your attention and dollars these days, it’s easy to miss when the latest releases are heading to a cinema near you. So come back every week as we here at So, Is It Any Good? preview the new movies hitting screens, and give you the lowdown on what to watch this weekend.

This weekend, the Four Horsemen return with a new bag of tricks in Now You See Me 2George Clooney and Julia Roberts grapple with the Money Monster, and Nicole Kidman is the Queen Of The Desert.

Now You See Me 2

NowYouSeeMe2PosterRating: M

Starring: Mark Ruffalo, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Lizzy Caplan, Daniel Radcliffe, Morgan Freeman

Synopsis: The world’s greatest illusionists return for a second mind-bending adventure, elevating the limits of stage illusion to new heights.

Trailer:

Why you should care: The first Now You See Me was a fun little romp, equal parts spectacular illusions and buddy comedy. The sequel looks to be more of the same, although they’ve swapped Isla Fisher for Lizzy Caplan, and added the most well-known wizard ever – Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe. Radcliffe is well-known to take the piss out of himself, so I’d say his performance will be delivered with a huge wink. If you enjoyed the first one, and are in the mood for a bit more magic, this is your bet.

Who should see it: Those who are prepared to be amazed

Money Monster

MoneyMonsterPosterRating: M

Starring: George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Jack O’Connell

Synopsis: In the real-time, high stakes thriller Money Monster, financial TV host Lee Gates (George Clooney) and his producer Patty (Julia Roberts) are put in an explosive situation when an irate investor (Jack O’Connell) takes over their studio.

Trailer:

Why you should care: It’s nice to see a grown-up thriller in theatres awash with superhero movies and CGI extravaganzas (not that there’s anything wrong with those either). I love a movie that takes place primarily in one place, like Phone Booth or Inside Man, so if the stakes are high enough and they can sustain the tension for the full run-time this could be a winner. The hardest part to pull off is always the ending, but to find out if they stick the landing you’ll have to go see for yourself!

Who should see it: Thrill seekers

Queen Of The Desert

QueenOfTheDesertPosterRating: M

Starring: Nicole Kidman, James Franco, Robert Pattinson

Synopsis: A chronicle of Gertrude Bell’s life, a traveler, writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attaché for the British Empire at the dawn of the twentieth century.

Why you should care: I was so bored during this trailer I almost stopped watching. That doesn’t bode well for the film. Nicole Kidman keeps taking these roles of strong, pioneering women, and playing them all exactly the same way – cool and borderline disinterested. Meh. Director Werner Herzog has made some good films, but maybe instead of watching this dreck you should go rent Rescue Dawn instead.

Who should see it: Only those really starved of things to do
