So World of Warcraft’s latest expansion, Warlords of Draenor, launched a couple of days ago, and from where I’m sitting it has to one of the worst launches to a game I’ve seen in a while, and I’ve been through most COD launches.

I’ll start off by saying that I don’t play WoW and therefore I’m not talking from first hand experience. What I have been doing is watching it all unfold over twitch.tv. The failure of the launch isn’t entirely Blizzard’s fault. It’s those pesky hacker kids that love the DDoS crap. Eff those DDoS jerks.

Watching people’s twitch stream names change to “OMAHG WOD IS OUT 24 STRUM GUYZ WOOT HYPE HYPE WOD (donate plz)” only to then be bombarded by disconnect after disconnect, roll back after roll back and just generally lagging like hell, changed their moods very, very quickly. People racing to 100, losing an hour or two’s worth of experience due to a roll back.

What didn’t help the matter is Blizzard’s lack of anticipation on how many people would be trying to compete for the same quest and therefore quest area/mobs. The bottleneck was and is real. There’s more things I’m sure they could have done to improve the overall experience for their paying customers, however, I’m sure once people get all those items they e-fondle they’ll forgive Blizzard.

Those that managed to push through it and hit the all exciting level 100 is probably going to be rewarded with less lag and less competition in those straggling behind because of work and other stupid crap that gets in the way of doing what we love most.

With all that said it does look like a really nice expansion. Just watching people’s twitch streams over the last couple of days has tempted me to try it again right up until I remember I can’t control myself when I play MMO’s and it’s probably in my families best interest that I go to work and do other things like eat, and give my kid a bath.
