‘Venom’ Is Now Connected To The MCU

Exciting news for those of you who were bummed about the prospect of a Spidey-less Vemom, series producer Amy Pascal has brought news that will be welcome relief. Speaking at an event next to Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige, she revealed that Venom will indeed exist in the same universe as Tom Holland’s Spider-man: Homecoming.

She had this to say:

Those movies will now take place in the world we’re creating for Peter Parker. They’ll be adjunct to it, they may be different locations, but it will still all be in the same world and they will be connected to each other.

That sound you hear? The collective sigh of relief from millions of Marvel fans. Sony hasn’t exactly been the best keeper of this particular IP, and Venom and Black & Silver (the Silver Sable and Black Cat movie) seemed somewhat like cynical cash-grabs and just a way to keep the rights to Spider-man alive without the complication of having to work out the web-slinger’s involvement.

And what about Tom Holland appearing in Venom? Pascal says it’s a possibility:

There’s a chance! There’s always a chance.

Sweet! Venom is one of Spidey’s biggest villains, so it would’ve been weird to see a standalone Venom without so much as a glimpse of Peter Parker. Venom, starring Tom Hardy, is due to go into production this year for an expected 2018 release.

We can probably safely stop short of saying that Venom is now a part of the MCU proper. I mean let’s be honest, it’s not like he’ll be crossing over into Avengers  territory and likewise Iron Man or Thor are unlikely to be popping up in Sony pics anytime soon. But it is cool to know that the Sony movies will stick to the same timeline of events and maybe reference what’s happening in the greater MCU.

VENOM is due in 2018, and SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING is out July 6.
