TV Review: Fear The Walking Dead S3

Note: What follows is a spoiler-light review of the first two episodes of season 3 of Fear The Walking DeadHaving a prior knowledge of the series is probably a good idea before diving in.

The safest place in a world gone mad. Fear The Walking Dead returns for a new season of thrills, chills, and most importantly… zombies. So, is it any good?Right from the beginning of the season opener, you’re thrown in the deep end. The survivors have been captured, processed and caged. Their fate is uncertain, and as a viewer, you forget you’re watching from the outside, you’re being drawn in like your right there. It’s a reunion of current and past cast members, but there’s no time for pleasantries, this rollercoaster of emotions draws you in holding your breath the entire time and this is just the first episode! Are the soldiers a threat, or here to help? It doesn’t take long to find out that Travis (Cliff Curtis) and the others are doomed. Right from the word go, you learn this platoon of soldiers isn’t the friendly fire type, more mentally disturbed. As each prisoner is lead to their slaughter, Travis, Nick (Frank Dillane), and the others must formulate a plan to not only save themselves from this horrendous doom that is creeping up on them but also find a way to escape.

Intense scenes are peppered throughout the first episode, especially Madison (Kim Dickens) kicking some serious ass with a spoon and Travis fighting to survive a maze of flesh-hungry zombies. And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better the end sequence puts a smile on your face, taking out one of the main protagonists in the episode with an homage to Nightmare On Elm Street and sprinkle of Willard. The events that follow will take the series in a new direction.Episode 2 brings back familiar faces like Victor Strand (Colman Domingo), and splits up the family dynamics once more with Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey), Jake (Sam Underwood), Travis & Luciana (Danay García) in one group, and Nick and Madison in the other on their way to a man-made fortress with the soldiers. With a party mix bag of emotions, action, death, and a big reveal, episode 2 has to be experienced from start to finish. It’s an explosive double episode to kick off the season, and cements Fear The Walking Dead as a force to be reckoned with. In the immortal words of Madison “Eat shit, smile, and bide our time”. It’s the only way to survive the undead apocalypse.

FEAR THE WALKING DEAD returns to our screens on ‘FX’ – Mondays @ 7.30pm AEST on FX Express from the US
