There’s something about the pairing of Hollywood heavyweights Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson that just makes sense. It could be their similar filmmaking sensibilities, or perhaps its their shared love of old school adventure films. Either way, it comes as no surprise to hear that the two are set to collaborate once more on an as yet unannounced project. What is a surprise however is that the project in question will not be the long awaited Tin Tin sequel, but another film entirely.
Speaking in an interview ahead of the New Zealand release of The BFG, Spielberg dropped this interesting tidbit:
“Peter was so busy with ‘The Hobbit’ that it took him away from ‘Tintin’ and he’s doing another film for my company now. It’s a secret, nobody knows about it. Then after that he’ll do ‘Tintin.’”
Theories as to what exactly this new project could be have been doing the rounds the last few days, and include a remake of the 1955 war film Dam Busters, and an adaptation of the book As Nature Made Him: The Boy Who Was Raised as a Girl, which as you would guess from the title is slightly more serious in tone.
Whatever shape this mystery film ends up taking, I personally hope it leans more toward the adult spectrum rather than the kid friendly fare we’ve been seeing lately from the Bearded Ones. While The BFG and Tin Tin are both perfectly enjoyable pieces of light entertainment, it’d be great to see Jackson return to his horror roots, and for Spielberg to recapture some of that experimental edge he showed with films like A.I. and Minority Report.
