There’s Double The Steve Carrell In The New Trailer For ‘Despicable Me 3’

Universal and Illumination have released the first trailer for their new merchandising exercise threequel in the Despicable Me franchise. Check it out above.

Once again featuring the voiceover talents of Steve Carrell playing supervillain Gru, he’s joined on this “comic” adventure by himself, also voicing Gru’s long lost twin brother Dru. Cue the jokes about the differences between them… meh. It also features the voices of Kristen Wiig, Trey Parker, Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, Nev Scharrel, Steve Coogan, Jenny Slate and Julie Andrews. Here’s the official synopsis:

Joining Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig in Despicable Me 3 is Emmy, Tony and Grammy Award winner Trey Parker, co-creator of Comedy Central’s global phenomenon South Park and the Broadway smash The Book of Mormon.  Parker voices the role of villain Balthazar Bratt, a former child star who’s grown up to become obsessed with the character he played in the ‘80s, and proves to be Gru’s most formidable nemesis to date.

The term flogging a dead horse comes to mind, as all of the funny aspects of this setup seem to have been mined in the previous entries. The cynic in me sees this as a blatant cash grab and an opportunity to sell more Minions toys (who are mercifully not in the trailer much), but it’ll probably make billions, so we’ll be “treated” to Despicable Me 4 as well. As the Ice Age franchise has shown, when you’re onto a good thing you keep going until you run it into the ground.

DESPICIBLE ME 2 arrives in theatres June 15, 2017.
