Aussie movies can be quirky at the best of times, so when I saw the stills for the new Australian film Girl Asleep, I thought the trailer would be worth a look. What I found was the warped love child of Napoleon Dynamite and Wes Anderson (in a good way). It looks like great 70’s retro fun and I can imagine it will be as equally quotable as the loveable redhead who voted for Pedro. I wouldn’t be surprised if I saw a few girls dressed like the movie’s villains (below) at this year’s Oz Comic Con:
Relative new comers Bethany Whitmore and Harrison Feldman are under the wing of first time director Rosemary Myers. Based on the critically acclaimed Windmill Theatre Co play, Girl Asleep is a journey into the absurd, scary and beautiful heart of the teenage mind. Here’s the official synopsis:
“The world is closing in on Greta Driscoll. On the cusp of turning fifteen she can’t bear to leave her childhood, it contains all the things that give her comfort in this incomprehensible new world. She floats in a bubble of loserdom with her only friend Elliott, until her parents throw her a surprise 15th birthday party and she’s flung into a parallel place; a world that’s weirdly erotic, a little bit violent and thoroughly ludicrous – only there can she find herself.”
I’m definitely curious enough to give this home grown potential gem a chance.
