So Good News: Justice League, Aladdin, Spider-Man: Homecoming

The world of movie news moves at lightspeed some days, so it’s hard to keep up with everything (even for those of us that run an entertainment blog). So welcome to your daily news briefing here at So, Is It Any Good? where we round up the breaking stories you might have missed.

And Justice League For All

DCEU architect Geoff Johns has taken to Twitter to tease Superman’s involvement in Justice League. This is the first hint that old Supes won’t be sitting this one out for long.

Fresh off the success of Wonder Woman, there comes word that Connie Neilson and Robin Wright will pop up in Justice League as well. Possibly biting the hand that feeds her though, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins took part in a Reddit AMA and let slip that she’s not really a fan of the whole “extended universe” idea.

Casting Couch

Is Guy Ritchie looking at Tom Hardy for the role of villain Jafar in his Aladdin remake? Guys, guys, guys… Hardy doesn’t need to be in every blockbuster going. Maybe spread the love around a bit…

The X-Men franchise is taking a big swing for its next film, potentially courting Angelina Jolie for the title role in Dark PhoenixBetween this and Bride Of Frankenstein, it looks like Jolie is ready to get back into the blockbuster game.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star Zhang Ziyi has joined Warner Bros’ “Monsterverse” with roles in Godzilla: King Of The Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong. Really, a Monsterverse? Not to be confused with the Dark Universe that Universal is peddling. These connected/shared universes are getting out of hand!

Black Mirror actress Hannah John-Kamen has landed a “key” role in the Marvel sequel Ant-Man And The Wasp. No word yet on what the role is, or indeed how key it will be in the superhero pic.Deck the halls! Melissa McCarthy is bringing her brand of all-out comedy to the Christmas genre, with a starring role in the comedy musical Margie Claus. It’ll be the first time singing for the actress as well.

In reverse casting news, Entertainment Weekly spoke with Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall about why original Mary Poppins Julie Andrews won’t be appearing in the sequel. She’s such a classy lady.

Direct This

Tireless director Doug Liman has taken on another potential franchise starter, with the YA novel adaptation Unearthed being slotted onto his dance card. At this point, we just need to round up the projects that Liman hasn’t had a finger in at some stage.

Spoiler Alert

The true identity of the character Zendaya is playing in Spider-man: Homecoming has been revealed. It would definitely be counted as a spoiler though, so don’t click the link if you want to be spoiler-free until July 6.

That’s A Wrap!

Filming on the Tomb Raider reboot starring Alicia Vikander has wrapped. This means we’re that much closer to some more Lara Croft action on screen!

Candid Chap

Director Neil Blomkamp has gotten candid about the disappointing and “painful” failure of his sci-fi robot feature Chappie. It was no Short Circuit that’s for sure.

If You Build It…

And finally, there comes word that Guardians Of The Galaxy director and Marvel favourite James Gunn will have a central role in shaping the Marvel Cosmic Universe from here on out, starting with Guardians Vol. 3.
