Shimmer Lake

Shimmer Lake – Netflix Review

Shimmer Lake, an inventive crime thriller told backward, reversing day by day through the week. Following a local Sheriff’s quest to unlock the mystery of three small town criminals, and a bank heist gone wrong.

Wow, that sounds like a great movie.

So, Is It Any Good?Netflix’s latest offering into its Original content fails hard. The story and actors alone are enough for anyone to add to their list. Check out this cast; Rainn WilsonRob CorddryRon LivingstonWyatt RussellJohn Michael Higgins and Benjamin Walker. It’s solid. But what should have been a smart, funny, interwoven character driven film, ended up being a confusing, convoluted, nonsensical mess. You see can see what writer and director Oren Uziel was trying to do, but the end result lacked proper execution, and the run time of 1 hour 20 minutes didn’t help the film either.Shimmer LakeThe film starts on the last day of the story, where all the events have already taken place. What that means is that you already know how and when certain character deaths will take place. You already know what events have happened, and also how the characters have dealt with it. Unfortunately, due to the run time, each day only lasts about 20 mins. That is nowhere near enough time to understand what the heck is going on.

The end of this film does, however, have a payoff. You begin to understand how everything before it unfolded, why it happened, and its starts to make a little sense. It’s too little too late though, as you already have no interest or investments in the characters. You don’t care about the people in the film, what they are doing, and why they are doing it because you don’t see them evolve with the story. Shimmer LakeIf this movie was to be re-cut in a more linear fashion, then I would have given it a big YES. It’s because of the way the film was executed that it gets a big NO. If this review confuses you, then welcome to what it would be like to watch Shimmer Lake.
