Robert Downey Jnr Has MCU Retirement Plans

It’s difficult to think of the MCU without Robert Downey Jnr., but it is a reality that we’ve been expecting on some level for a long time. And whilst doing the publicity rounds for Spider-man: Homecoming, he has opened up on eventually hanging up the Iron Man suit.

In a new interview with News.com.au, Downey Jnr. has discussed eventually walking away from the role that revitalised his career:

“Everyone says to me it’s like a glove that fits so well. I have to start over every time but I am starting over with a pretty solid base. I just never want to blow it for the last six or seven [movies] I have done by dropping the ball because I decided to go do it one more time. I just want to hang up my jersey before it’s embarrassing.”

He also discussed the reason he keeps coming back to make these movies:

“It’s this cyclical thing I could have said when the first Avengers came out: ‘It’s never going to get any better than that. Everybody stop’. But to me, it’s always about people and opportunities, like the (Avengers directors Anthony and Joe) Russos, who I adore.”

With the MCU heading towards an Infinity War, and the landscape changing considerably after the events of Avengers 4, it would seem like the perfect opportunity for Downey Jnr. to move on and leave the suit in the hands of a new Iron Man for Phase 4. The question then becomes, who should that be?

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING is out on July 6, and AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR is due April 25, 2018.
