The 89th Academy Awards has officially kicked off, with the unveiling of their nominations this morning. Surprising absolutely no one, La La Land, Damien Chazelle‘s much-loved ode to the classic movie musicals came out on top, with a record-tying 14 nominations.
It was nominated in every category that it was eligible, and now holds the record for most noms with 1950’s All About Eve and James Cameron’s Titanic in 1997. If the Academy indeed goes ga-ga over La La as much as it seems, they could conceivably tie with Ben-Hur, Titanic, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King for the most wins by a film ever (11 total).
It is joined in the Best Picture race by sci-fi alien pic Arrival, Mel Gibson‘s war epic Hacksaw Ridge, indie sensations Moonlight and Manchester By The Sea, true story tear-jerkers Hidden Figures and Lion, Denzel Washington‘s play adaptation Fences, and heist thriller Hell Or High Water.
Other highlights from the nominations:
- Arrival and Moonlight both reaped 8 nominations apiece, including Best Picture and Best Director, capitalizing on their momentum from other awards guilds.
- #OscarsSoWhite won’t be trending this year, as a record number of black actors got the nod – six in total – as well as other nods in Directing, Documentary Feature, and more.
- Meryl Streep racked up her 20th career nomination, for Florence Foster Jenkins, which further extends her record of the most nominated actor ever.
- Mel Gibson has been finally released from Hollywood jail, making a triumphant return to the Oscar party with the war pic Hacksaw Ridge, which garnered 6 nods including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Andrew Garfield.
- Lin-Manuel Miranda is going for the coveted EGOT crown (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony), as the Hamilton creator is nominated for Best Song for the Moana track “How Far I’ll Go”.
- And finally, Australia managed its first ever Foreign Language Film nomination (I know right?), for the South Pacific set Romeo and Juliet tale Tanna.
Notable “snubs” in the list include Arrival’s Amy Adams, left off the Best Actress list that many had laminated her name on, in favour of Loving‘s Ruth Negga. Martin Scorsese got no love for Silence, and ditto for Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks for Sully, which only managed one nomination for sound. The biggest snub, in my eyes, is the crowd-pleasing juggernaut Deadpool, which going into the nominations had scored surprise noms from the Producers Guild, Writers Guild, and the Golden Globes. Alas, the Academy’s distaste for comic book adaptations continues. ‘Pool should and will be pissed.
