Star Wars News: Obi Wan is Officially Getting a Spin-Off

It’s no secret that Lucasfilm and Disney are planning a whole host of spin-offs which will focus on key players from the original Star Wars trilogy. The Han Solo movie has almost wrapped with new director Ron Howard at the helm.  Now, THR has reported that an Obi Wan Kenobi movie is on the way with Oscar nominated director Stephen Daldry in early talks.

Daldry gained significant critical accolade with his 2000 movie Billy Elliot earning him an Oscar nomination for his trouble. Since then, Daldry has produced some equally melodramatic pieces such as The Hours, The Reader and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. This would most likely explain the direction that Lucasfilm would prefer to head in after their very public dismissal of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller from the Han Solo project following the news that they had made it too funny. There was a lot more to it than that, for sure, but ultimately it was down to creative differences. What does Daldry have that Lord and Miller don’t? Aside form a bunch of Oscar nominations, that is.

This Isn’t the Guy You Are Looking For?

It is safe to assume that the Obi Wan movie will bridge the gap between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope where he went from a Jedi on the run to becoming a desert-dwelling, sand-hermit. A number of publications support Obi Wan’s journey but when it comes to bringing them to the big screen then they are often given a clean slate. Daldry confirmed that the movie is in very early stages and a script or any actors are yet to be looked at. Ewan McGregor has expressed a keen interest in reprising his role as the titular hero and he may be in with a good chance, Harrison Ford was replaced by Alden Ehrenreich to play Han Solo for the the prequel because.. Well, let’s face it, there’s not enough CGI in the world to make Ford look young again. However, McGregor hasn’t aged a day and they could pick up the movie from where Revenge of the Sith left off. I, for one, would love to see that.alden

The Han Solo and Obi Wan spin-off movies won’t be alone in the Star Wars extended universe for too long.  The studio is reportedly looking at Yoda and Boba Fet movies in the pipeline. But why stop there? I think there is some potential for other characters to have their own solo run; like a Mace Windu movie? Samuel L. Jackson somehow survived that fall, ‘Say ‘the Force is strong in this one’ again! I dare ya, I double dare ya!’ Perhaps Qui-Gon Jinn could return with an exceptional set of skills which are a nightmare for Storm Troopers? Or, we give Jar Jar Binks his own movie?… That last one was definitely a joke.

What do you think to an Obi Wan solo movie? Would you like to see Ewan McGregor back in the role? Leave your comments below or on Facebook and may the Force be with you.
