The Defenders – Netflix Review

It’s the Netflix team up we have been waiting for since Daredevil graced our screens in 2015. DaredevilIron FistJessica Jones, and Luke Cage band together as The Defenders to try and stop the nefarious and highly secretive Hand organisation from taking over New York.

So, Is It Any Good?YESSeriously, so much yes. Some of the previous stand alone series were lacklustre, to say the least. They suffered from awkward pacing, and in some instances, plots that just didn’t go anywhere. Thankfully The Defenders has none of this. The first episode sees us catch up with the superhero quartet straight away. It’s easy to remember where Iron Fist and Luke Cage left us, as they were the most recently released.

However, all I wanted to do was see what happened to Daredevil? Season 2 ended on such a cliffhanger, did Matt Murdoch (Charlie CoxKaren Page (Deborah Ann Woll) and Foggy (Elden Henson) repair their friendship? Are Matt and Karen still an on again off again thing? Is Foggy still working with Trinity from The Matrix? Should I be watching Days Of Our Lives to get my romantic drama fix? Thankfully, you don’t need to wait long to find out.the defenders

Right from the get go, The Defenders packs a serious punch. Each character has their own individual screen time to help the viewer remember where their solo series left off. There are a lot of setups to be played out before we get to see them all fighting together, but it is thankfully not drawn out. Netflix and Marvel have dodged a bullet with their writing, as most team up movies/TV shows tend to suffer from being over crowded with story and sub plot making them hard to follow, The Defenders has none of this.

One thing Netflix and Marvel always get right on every series is their fight sequences. If you loved all the close-quarters hallway fights in the previous series then The Defenders will leave you in awe of the tremendous amount of fight choreography and bat s@#t crazy action sequences that are in this series. Although, Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) does seem to fall to the wayside a little bit with the likes of Daredevil, Luke Cage (Mike Colter)and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) at her side. What she lacks in fighting skills she easily makes up for with her incredible intellect and smart ass quips. The DefendersOne thing I didn’t like about the show was the way it was put together. It becomes very predictable when you are watching each characters story arc, the way it goes from Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones to Daredevil then starts back at Iron Fist again, was a little bit too formulaic for me. I have to say though, the stand out of the season so far is hands down Sigourney Weaver’s character Alexandra, in the words of the great Forrest Gump “That’s all I have to say about that”. The series also stars Scott Glenn, Elodie Yung and Rosario Dawson.

If you have been anticipating The Defenders release, then you will not be disappointed. It’s pretty much the John Wick of Marvel television.

THE DEFENDERS streams worldwide on August 18, only on Netflix.
