It’s not quite jazz hands and high kicks, but there’s definitely something old Hollywood about the new teaser trailer that Lionsgate just dropped for their original musical La La Land.
Check it out above!
Written and directed by Academy Award nominee Damien Chazelle (Whiplash), La La Land tells the story of Mia (Emma Stone), an aspiring actress, and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern day Los Angeles, this original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams. It may be set in the modern day, but this is definitely harking back to the genre’s heyday. From the use of spotlight wipes and old school titles down to the very fact that Gosling is a jazz musician and not a hip-hop star (could you imagine!). This will mark the 3rd collaboration between Gosling and Stone after Crazy Stupid Love and Gangster Squad. These guys are definitely making a run at being the new Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan combo, and if they show the same chemistry that lifted Crazy above the rom-com pack, I’m sold.
I’m digging the vibe of the trailer (yes, even Gosling’s singing), and it looks gorgeous. Chazelle knows his way around a camera and an edit, and Whiplash was very musical in it’s cutting style, so I think he’ll do well in a pure musical setting. Originally set for release this week, it’s been pushed back into the Oscar corridor of December, so the studio must have a good feeling about it. It’s very much a teaser trailer though, so we’ll have to wait for the next trailer to really see what the film has in store for us.
