Jared Leto To Star As Playboy Hugh Hefner

Jared Leto will be in the pajamas of Hugh Hefner in a new film to be directed by Brett Ratner. The announcement comes courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter. Hugh Hefner passed away just recently at the age of 91, and his legacy is one of controversy and intrigue which would make a great Oscar bait film.

Brett Ratner is a rather notorious director, while responsible for the classic Rush Hour, he also made X-Men: The Last Stand. It is hard to imagine that Ratner was also a producer on the Award-winning film The Revenant. Ratner has been quoted as saying, “my goal is to do the motion picture as an event.”. Hefner lived a life of luxury and excess that trickled into reality tv shows, video games and the fantasies of many men.hugh-hefner

The Potential Of A Playboy

Hugh Hefner was a man who personified the definition of hedonism. His massive Playboy mansion would host parties that would attract the rich and famous. His magazine published articles from acclaimed journalist and celebrities. However, Hefner has been slammed by feminists, religious leaders, and politicians for peddling what they saw as smut and objectifying women. Leto will have the chance of a lifetime to play such a polarising figure. Ratner commented on his friendship to Leto and stated to THR:

“When he heard I got the rights to Hef’s story, he told me, ‘I want to play him. I want to understand him.’ And I really believe Jared can do it. He’s one of the great actors of today.”

Robert Downey Jr. was set previously to play the larger than life figure in the Universal production in 2007. RatPac Entertainment, Ratner’s company, now has the rights and is in the early phase of development. Ratner has even more planned, with Playboy After Dark also in development to be rebooted, which was originally hosted by Hugh Hefner.
