Samuel-L-Jackson-as-Nick-Fury

Is Samuel L. Jackson Joining ‘Captain Marvel’?

Update: Although Marvel is still yet to confirm, Deadline is reporting that Jackson will indeed be joining Captain Marvel.

After sitting out the last couple of Marvel outings, we were starting to miss Samuel L. Jackson‘s Nick Fury. Sure, he’s slated to appear in the next two Avengers films, 2018’s Infinity War and 2019’s Avengers 4, but after forging the team through 7 previous movies it has seemed weird to not see him in everything

Taking a break after appearing in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jackson might be headed back to the MCU in a non-Avengers capacity, potentially co-starring in 2019’s Captain Marvel, alongside Brie Larsen. According to Omega Underground, Jackson might be reporting to the film’s Atlanta set in January next year… provided his contract gets extended that is. His last Marvel film is set to be 2019’s Avengers 4, but if we’ve learned anything from the other MCU heavy-hitters (Robert Downey Jnr, Chris Evans), they love working with Marvel so much that if the stories are there (and the paycheck), they’ll show up too. It’s interesting that Jackson’s role is being billed as a “co-star,” meaning his character will take a larger role than normal alongside Larsen’s Carol Danvers. It could be similar to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where Fury had a significant role in the plot beyond just showing up to say wise things. It could also be a way to hedge Marvel’s bets on its first female-fronted superhero pic, by providing the support of a fan favourite, but I just hope it doesn’t take any of the spotlight away from Larson and an important step forward for the MCU.

The film is set to be directed by Anna Bolden and Ryan Fleck (It’s Kind of a Funny Story) from a screenplay by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out).

CAPTAIN MARVEL is set to hit theatres on March 7, 2019.
