How’d They Do That? – Mission: Impossible

Often in this column, we look at practical/CG effects and their use on the screen, but today we are going to look at another method of giving audiences the ‘WOW’ factor in the theatre. Lets look at the some of the crazy stunts of the Mission: Impossible series!

The last film in the series, 2011’s Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol, featured an amazing sequence where Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) climbed the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The biggest star in the world, climbing the tallest building in the world. Shot in the IMAX format, this vertigo inducing sequence blew audiences away as we watched Tom Cruise run, jump and dive as casually as possible, 119 floors off the ground. Check out this clip on the making of this fantastic scene:

Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation opens in theatres tomorrow (check our our review here) and if the trailers are anything to indicate, the flick looks like it will continue Tom Cruise’s mission to personally do every crazy stunt possible. Whilst it must cost the studios millions in insurance, its just amazing to know that its Tom himself out there doing all these crazy things. I guess that’s a testament to the power of producing your own films!

Check out this featurette on the crazy plane stunt featured in the trailer for the film!

Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation is in theatres from July 30th.
