Could A GOONIES Sequel Be On The Horizon?

Over the years, several key cast members of the 1985 classic The GooniesCorey FeldmanJosh Brolin, Sean Astin — have expressed varying degrees of interest in reprising their roles in a long-rumoured sequel, from the “oh yeah it’d be great someday” remarks to the full blown “this is going to happen, and soon” type vibe. That last sentiment has been echoed by the main man himself, as Astin in the past has boldly claimed that a sequel is a “lock” to happen. Last month, while on the fan circuit at Phoenix Comicon, he once again said that Goonies 2 will happen, and even dropped a bit of a story tidbit when he announced who might be showing up to the excited crowd.

Watch below:

Hey you guys!

One-Eyed Willy is of course the legend that hangs over the whole first Goonies film, a 17th century pirate who guarded his hidden treasure with elaborate, and sometimes terrifying, booby traps. I don’t know about you, but I definitely got a sweet hit of nostalgia this morning! Now actors say stuff about projects all the time, and I’m not readying my ticket money till there’s an official green-light and they’ve started shooting, but c’mon! Are you even the slightest bit pumped about this? The Goonies is one of my all-time favourites, so the possibility (however remote) of getting a continuation to the story of Mikey, Mouth, Data, Chunk, and the rest of the group is exciting. gooniestruffleshuffleOrdinarily, I would see this revisiting of an old classic as a cynical cash-grab by the movie studio, but the principal players have such reverence for the movie, that it doesn’t seem like anything more than fans trying to continue a much-loved story. I’ll take that.

GOONIES 2 will be released (hopefully) soon.
