So Good News: Bumblebee, Hellboy, Dredd

The world of movie news moves at light-speed some days, so it’s hard to keep up with everything. So welcome to today’s news briefing here at So, Is It Any Good? where we round up the breaking stories you might have missed.

First Look

We’ve got our first look at Hailee Steinfeld in the 80’s set Transformers spin-off Bumblebee, and I’m digging the vibe. Here’s hoping it is closer in spirit to the first Transformers movie before the robot carnage took over.

WTF Alert

Despite, you know, dying in the first Avatar, James Cameron has revealed that Stephen Lang‘s Colonel Quartich will return for all four of the planned sequels. Not only that, he’ll be the main antagonist, the big bad causing trouble for Jake, Neytiri, and the other Na’vi. Ok Cameron… avatar-stephen-lang

Hell Save The Queen

This Hellboy reboot is picking up steam, after the addition of Ian McShane recently, Big Red has found his big bad, in the form of Milla Jovovich. She’ll be playing The Blood Queen and it makes a nice change of pace for the actress best known for shooting down hordes of monsters in the Resident Evil franchise.milla-jovovich-resident-evil

You Got Some ‘Splaining To Do!

Amazon has picked up the distribution rights to Lucy And Desia hot property Lucille Ball/Desi Arnaz biopic that has been scripted by Oscar-winner Aaron Sorkin and is to star two-time Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett. Talk about stacking the deck! They’re also looking to get Javier Bardem on board to play Desi, so if the right director pounces, this could be something special.Cate-Blanchett-Lucille-Ball1

Striking Out On Their Own

The world’s biggest entertainment company, Disney has until now largely stayed out of the streaming game, preferring to showcase their movies mostly through Netflix. That all stands to change with the announcement of a Disney owned streaming service, launching in 2019 at the end of their current Netflix contract. So far details are sketchy, it’s not great news for Netflix’s movie offering.Walt_disney_pictures

Kick-Ass Purchase

Netflix has followed the Disney news with a big announcement of their own, purchasing comic Millarworld, run by legendary comic creator and writer Mark Millar. They’ve been responsible for titles such as Kick-AssWanted, and Kingsman, whose movie adaptations have grossed over $1 Billion. The Millarworld library will be mined to create series, movies and kid’s shows for Netflix, and they’ll continue to release comics under the Netflix label.mph-millarworld

Urban Looking For More Dredd

Speaking to TrekMovie, Karl Urban has expressed interest in revisiting the Judge Dredd character he brought to life in the sadly under-watched Dreddfor the proposed TV adaptation Judge Dredd: Mega City One.

“I am in discussions with them about that. I told them that if they write the material and give Dredd something to do and give him a function, I will be there. I would love to.”

We’d love you to as well Karl.dredd-karl-urban
