Golden Globe Awards 2017 Wrap Up

In a year that’s produced very few genuine awards front runners, today’s Golden Globe Awards were always going to be a one horse race, and the much celebrated La La Land not only dominated proceeding, it managed to win all seven of its categories in the process. In addition to the top honours, 30 year old directing prodigy Damien Chazelle bagged himself writing and directing gongs, and Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling took home a pair of acting awards. If only the trio could sort out their congratulatory hugs…

Overall the awards were a predictable affair, with Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig providing one of the show’s few genuine laugh out loud moments, and Meryl Streep gave a speech worthy of Meryl Streep that’s already gone viral.

Jimmy Fallon’s hosting duties were carried out in typical inoffensive fashion, his La La Land-inspired intro being the obvious highlight.

Elsewhere, Casey Affleck mumbled his way to victory, and Viola Davis proved she’s one of the classiest acts around with her win for Fences. Meanwhile in the Best Animation category, Disney beat themselves to the podium, with Zootopia edging out tough competition from Moana, which in this humble writer’s opinion was the better film. Oh, and Deadpool pashed Spiderman.

Despite what many media outlets would have you believe, the Golden Globes give little to no indication of who will win come Oscar night, but I would put my money on La La Land once again dominating the main event, with Moonlight being a strong chance for a Best Picture upset. We will know for sure come February 26th.
