Gavin O’Connor Set To Helm ‘Suicide Squad 2’

Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros and DC have found their white whale… I mean, a director for their Suicide Squad 2. Gavin O’Connor has been set to direct the bad guys fighting bad guys sequel that is primed to lure back Will SmithMargot RobbieJared Leto, and the rest of the gang. O’Connor most recently directed The Accountant for the studio and was working on a sequel, but presumably, Squad will be next up on his dance card.

This ends the studio’s long and winding search to replace David Ayer, who wrote and directed the original that was detested by fanboys but still managed to rake in $745 million worldwide. Ayer has moved aside to direct Gotham City Sirens, one of the (many) spinoff movies the studio is building around Robbie’s Harley Quinn character.
Up until recently, Warner Bros was eyeing directors as diverse as Mel Gibson and Jaume Collet-Serra, but the latter decided he’d rather take a ride with Dwayne Johnson on Disney’s Jungle Cruise. No word on when O’Connor successfully pitched for the job, but he’ll be playing at a whole new level of blockbuster with his new gig. The Accountant was a taut and economical thriller, and if he can bring the same economy to a movie stuffed with personalities, then we might just have a sequel worth our time.

The first film was about a group of villains who were conscripted to fight even more terrible villains with the idea that they were expendable. Hopefully, this next installment doesn’t feel the need to introduce us to the characters again (and again) and can find a big bad worthy of fighting.

The studio has been diversifying its DC universe of late, setting The Hangover director Todd Phillips to direct standalone spin-off The Joker, and then tapping John Requa and Glenn Ficarra for a separate spinoff for Leto’s Joker and Robbie’s Harley Quinn.

What do you guys think? Is O’Connor a good choice? Let us know your thoughts below, or on our Facebook page!
