FRIENDS FROM COLLEGE

Friends From College – Netflix Review

From the brilliant director/writer Nicholas Stoller, who helmed Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him To The Greek, comes a TV series that from the outside looks incredible from the cast with Keegan-Michael Key, Cobie Smulders, Kate McKinnon and Fred “Kevin Fucking Arnold” Savage. But is Friends From College any good? You might have the formula worked out on paper but once it translates to the small screen it comes out a jumbled mess. The show is based around a 20-year affair between Ethan (Key) and Sam (Annie Parisse). Ethan and his wife Lisa (Smulders) move back to New York City and reconnect with their posse of college friends and you guessed it… everything starts to go downhill, in one dismal failure after the next.

I must admit, I did binge watch Friends From College in one sitting, hoping with each episode I’d see something new and fresh, yet the laughs started to subside and the story kept taking me on a journey of self-boredom. From episode 6 the show completely lost me, I felt they hit a wall with the writing and tried to throw elements from Nicholas Stoller’s other, more successful movies into the series, possibly trying to capture something that was never there in the first place.I still can’t comprehend the casting of Ethan’s wife. It would have been more believable to have Cobie Smulders portraying Sam and Annie Parisse as Lisa. *SPOILER ALERT* – The moment the series died for me was Lisa’s affair with her disgusting ex-boyfriend Nick! With zero knowledge about Ethan’s affair, Lisa ends up cheating and to make matters worse they glorify it in a Forgetting Sarah Marshall sex montage that is stomach turning.

Don’t let this tragedy sucker you in. At the end of the day let Friends From College be just that… a distant memory.

FRIENDS FROM COLLEGE is now streaming on Netflix.
