“There Are 400,000 Men On This Beach” – The Full ‘Dunkirk’ Trailer Drops In

Following on from the haunting teaser trailer back in August, Warner Brothers have premiered the first full-length trailer for Christoper Nolan‘s Dunkirk. I think it’s safe to say this one isn’t going to have you reaching for the popcorn in the vein of his previous works, such as The Dark Knight trilogy and Inception. It’s bleak. Barely 40 seconds into the trailer, a soldier walks into the sea. He ducks his head beneath the waves, and the trailer fades to black. It’s pretty unsettling imagery to say the least, but there is no desensitising one of the most harrowing events in our past. The synopsis for the World War II battle reads:

Dunkirk opens as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.

After the slightly lukewarm reception Interstellar received, I reckon the director will be bang-on back-on form with this one. He’s literally coming back down from space to the grey skies and harsh winds of planet earth as depicted here in 1940, but with all the scope and drama one would expect from a Christoper Nolan film. I’m doubly excited by the cast as well. Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance and Cillian Murphy pad out an absolutely stellar line-up. Harry Styles also stars, and from the couple of glimpses you get here, he obviously got the gig for a reason. Who knows, come July 21st 2017 he may be elevated from footnote to first paragraph. Riffing off that epic tagline, this will be one of the movie events that shapes next summer.
