The fairies are hard at work conjuring up a deal that could bring back Angelina Jolie in the sequel to Disney’s successful Sleeping Beauty re-imagining Maleficent.
Deadline reports both that film’s producer, Joe Roth, and it’s screenwriter, Laura Woolverton, are in talks to take another stab at their good-fairy-gone-bad tale, although no deal is in place for Jolie to return as the titular villain.
Jolie has proved hesitant to sign on for another go round in many would-be franchises (Wanted, Salt), after a less-than-stellar response to her Tomb Raider sequel. She seems to prefer to work on original stories, such as her next directorial effort By The Sea starring husband, and fellow beautiful person, Brad Pitt. That film is set to hit theatres later this year.
The first Maleficent conjured up over $760 million in worldwide grosses, so it’s not hard to see why Disney would want to keep their cash cow going. It also seems to be the way forward for Disney to re-imagine their animated classics as live-action movies, with adaptations of Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Pinocchio, Dumbo, The Jungle Book, and Mulan in various stages of development.
Could it be too much to hope for a Tom Hanks/Tim Allen live action version of Toy Story? One can only dream….
