Cowboy Ninja Viking Gets A Release Date

For a movie with the most ludicrous of titles, it’s certainly getting a lot of people very excited. In saying that, with a name like Cowboy Ninja Viking, I’m not surprised.  However, the movie hasn’t had the best starts in life.  It sat in development hell for a number of years but, to the elation of its rather apparent fan base, it has finally been given the green light by Universal.

For those of you who don’t know, Cowboy Ninja Viking is a graphic novel which began in 2009 from Image Comics.  From the creative craniums of writer A. J. Lieberman and artist Riley Rossmo, the story follows an assassin with a split-personality disorder who manifests the skills of (you guessed it) a cowboy, a ninja and a viking. In 2010, Disney acquired the rights to adapt a film version with Deadpool screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reece to pen the screenplay.  Unfortunately, the story was considered far too edgy for them and the movie was dropped.  Two years later, Universal picked up the rights and, since then, a number of directors have shown interest in taking it on, including; John Wick co-directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski and World War Z‘s Marc Forster.

Chris Pratt has been flying the flag for the movie since he joined in 2014.  He recently said in an interview with Collider;

“It’s still in development. It’s definitely no joke. We’ve got a deal and we’re moving forward. It’s going to be [with] Universal. It’s going to be really, really fantastic … We don’t have a director. It’s together, it’s being put together. But we’re in the process of talking to directors.”

Pratt is set to co-produce the movie along with Guymon Casady, Mark Gordon and Michael De Luca.  This will notch another Universal project for Pratt who recently wrapped on Jurassic World: The Fallen Kingdom, set for release in June, 2018.

Cowboy Ninja Viking has been given the official release date of June 28th, 2019 and, by the look of the internet lately, is probably set to be the most anticipated movie of the year.  What do you think about Chris Pratt as a cowboy, ninja viking?  Are you a fan of the graphic novel?  Do you think Universal will do it justice?  Let us know your thoughts below or on Facebook.
