BOX OFFICE SHOWDOWN – OCT 1-5 – THE MARTIAN MAKES A LANDING

Every week we dissect the good, the bad, and the bombs of the Aussie box office world. No talk of box office would be complete without mention of the US, so we’ll also take a look at what’s hitting big, what’s not, and where our refined Aussie movie palates differ from our blockbuster loving American brethren (Hot tip – probably not all that much). Let’s dig in…

This weekend The Martian crash landed into theatres, and DeNiro and Hathaway clocked on for work in The Intern. But who was the employee of the week?

Number One With A Rocket: The Martian landed in the top spot this weekend, crushing its rivals under $6 million in G-Force. Seems everyone wants to be marooned on the Red Planet with Mr Damon. He’ll get some competition from Johnny next week, but look for the Ridley Scott directed picture to play well for weeks to come.

Impressing The Boss: Slotting nicely into the top ten work environment in the number 2 spot, The Intern made a good, if not spectacular, impression on its first weekend on the job. With all the oxygen being sucked up by The Martian, this was always going to play second fiddle, but it seems to have found some of the same audience which made Something’s Gotta Give a solid hit ($2.9 million opening, $11.9 million total).

Odd Ones Out No More: After bowing to less than stellar numbers a couple of weeks ago, both Pixels and the homegrown Oddball have been showing amazingly staying power, spurred on by amazing school holiday business. Oddball in particular is the particularly impressive performer this week. It rockets up over 700% week on week to $1.5 million in the 5th spot. With Pixels powering up another $1.4 million, their totals sit at a healthy $8.1 and $11.5 million. Oddball now sits near the top of local releases for the year, and showing this kind of stamina, it’s sure stay there.

Over in the U.S of A, The Martian took over the box office as it battled the animated ghouls for number 1. Did Matt Damon take the weekend crown?

Houston, We Have A Winner: To the surprise of no one, The Martian replicated it’s number 1 placing in the States as well. Although shy of Gravity’s October box office record of $55.8 million, it’s still a massive win for the space epic. Riding good reviews and solid audience love, this should bust through the $100 million stratosphere easy enough, probably by next weekend.

Not Checking Out: Hotel Transylvania 2 kept bringing in the guests in its second weekend, only dropping a small 31% to $33.1 million. It’ll get some competition from Goosebumps for the Halloween bucks, but with no other animated films on the horizon for a little while, the coast is clear for it to continue scaring up the millions.

It’s Spanish For Hit, Man: Sicario, fresh off a great run in limited release, surged an astounding 607% to push into third place, firing past The Intern on $12.1 million. The Emily Blunt starrer has $15.1 million in the bank after 3 weeks, and should continue to rake it in as good word of mouth spreads.

Up next week, Johnny Depp hits hard in Black Mass and Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette are BFF’s in Miss You Already.

So there you go folks, any surprises? Everything pan out just as you suspected? Hit us up in the comments and let us know what you’re enjoying at the multiplex. Also, if there’s anything you’d like to see us cover in the world of box office, speak up and let your opinion be known!
