Our Verdict

Why you should be interested: We had the serious zombie apocalypse two years ago with World War Z, and we get more dour zombie killers every week on The Walking Dead, so it’s good to see a movie take up the zom-com mantle from where Shaun Of The Dead and Zombieland left off. I don’t know if this movie reaches those heights, but it’ll be a fun ride to find out for yourselves!

Who should see it: Those that like to be prepared

man_up_xlgRating: M

Starring: Lake Bell, Simon Pegg, Olivia Williams

Synopsis: A single woman who’s mistaken for a stranger’s blind date, leads to her finding the perfect boyfriend.

Why you should be interested: Speaking of Shaun Of The Dead, that films co-writer and star Simon Pegg returns to our screens in what seems to be another charmingly British rom-com about mistaken identities and love. You’ll probably know how this is going to end before you even enter the theatre, but Pegg and Lake Bell (No Strings Attached) have good comedy instincts and it might be fun to watch it unfold to it’s inevitable conclusion.

Who should see it: Love-sick poms

freeheld_ver7_xlgRating: M

Starring: Julianne Moore, Ellen Page, Steve Carell, Michael Shannon

Synopsis: New Jersey police lieutenant Laurel Hester and her registered domestic partner Stacie Andree both battle to secure Hester’s pension benefits after she was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Why you should be interested: Definitely one for the drama lovers this weekend, Freeheld tells an important (and timely) story of one couple’s fight for equality. It’ll be by no means a bright, sunny watch, but it’s a story worth telling with an amazing cast to do the heavy lifting, so expect to come out of it with something to chew on.

Who should see it: Politically minded movie-goers

Now Add Honey

Now-Add-HoneyRating: M

Starring: Robyn Butler, Lucy Fry, Portia de Rossi, Hamish Blake

Synopsis: Normal life implodes for a suburban family when their pop-star cousin comes to stay.

Why you should be interested: After a successful year for local films that has had it’s share of wins (The Dressmaker, Last Cab To Darwin, Oddball) and some unfortunate missteps (Blinky Bill, Reuben Guthrie), now husband and wife team Wayne Hope and Robyn Butler (Upper Middle Bogan) bring their tale of teen stardom run amok to the big screen. Judging by the trailer, this seems to be going for broad-stroke laughs with nary a witty insight to be found. If you like your Aussie comedies shrieky and obvious, this might be your ticket.

Who should see it: Home grown comedy hounds
