Warner Bros have dropped a lovely Christmas present for all you Blade Runner fans out there – a first look at the highly anticipated follow up, Blade Runner 2049. Check out the first trailer by clicking the play button above!

One of my favourite directors at the moment, Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival), takes the helm on this follow up to the 1982 classic. with original director Ridley Scotsticking around to produce. The film stars Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, returning to one of his most famous (non-Han Solo/Indy) roles as Rick Deckard.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

The trailer looks moody, and as dystopic as ever. If your like me and studied the original Blade Runner to the death in the twelfth grade, I’m sure you’ll be able to point out all the colour palettes, ‘journey’ themes and the effective use of Vangelis music. (or at least enough to pass your HSC/ATAR exams).

Consider me interested – the trailer looks great and whilst we don’t learn alot, the pairing of Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford has me very excited. Hopefully it can all come together and not tarnish the original film. This isn’t the first film I think of when I think of 80’s flicks that need sequels, but so far its looking like a worthy successor. Hey, maybe we’ll even find out if Deckard is a replicant or not!

Blade Runner 2049 hits theatres in the second half of 2017.
