It’s one of the best-kept secrets of the film schedule. 10 Cloverfield Lane just hit the theaters. So, is it any good?
After a car accident finds her held up in a bomb shelter with her mysterious carer Howard (John Goodman), Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) discovers that the world has been attacked by an unknown airborne virus and most of the population has been wiped out. Suspecting this could be a lie told to keep her locked away by an untrustworthy guard she plans what could be a difficult escape.
This is one of those films that even the slightest detail in the wrong direction cold spoil the whole movie. Even me just saying that could be taken as a spoiler. 10 Cloverfield Lane is a must see film. It’s the Game of Thrones of what’s in cinemas at the moment, so I’ll keep this short.
produced by the mystery man himself JJ Abrams 10 Cloverfield Lane takes a different approach to a sequel. it doesn’t use any of the previous characters or settings and throws you into a confined space and what could be a post-apocalyptic world. This approach flips JJ Abrams mystery box on its head, as you know what’s happening in the box and you want to know what’s going on outside!
This might be one of John Goodman’s best roles, he has to be one of the most creepy and unsettling characters in a while. You never really know what he wants or if he is truly trying to protect Michelle. His menacing presence and overall stature in the film builds the tension among the characters and makes you feel overwhelmingly claustrophobic.
First-time director Dan Trachtenberg was an interesting choice for the film as from what I could tell he came out of nowhere, however, I then discovered he earned the gig after directing one of the most famous Fan Films Portal: No Escape. He does a brilliant job of keeping you on the edge of your seat throughout the film, making you question every action a character makes. The pacing of the film is near perfection.
10 Cloverfield Lane is a suspenseful roller coaster. you’ll never know what’s coming next. Even when you think you might have an idea something will happen that will throw you off course.
