What To Watch This Weekend – Apr 20-23

With so much grabbing for your attention and dollars these days, it’s easy to miss when the latest releases are heading to a cinema near you. So come back every week as we here at So, Is It Any Good? preview the new movies hitting screens, and give you the lowdown on what to watch this weekend.

This weekend, Anna Kendrick dines with the cool kids at Table 19, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine are Going In Style, propaganda is the name of the game in Their Finest, meat is murder in Raw, and the youngins will want a piece of old-school Aussie creature feature My Pet Dinosaur.

Here’s what to watch!

Table 19

Rating: M

Starring: Anna Kendrick, Craig Robinson, Lisa Kudrow

Synopsis: Ex-maid of honour Eloise – having been relieved of her duties after being unceremoniously dumped by the best man via text – decides to attend the wedding anyway only to find herself seated with 5 “random” guests at the dreaded Table 19.

OUR VERDICT

Trailer:

Why you should care: We’ve all been to that wedding where you only just know the bride and/or groom. Hopefully you’ve never been shafted onto the loser table like this lot. Table 19 looks like a pleasant enough diversion, helped greatly by a pretty great cast. You have to wonder what drew them to something like this? I personally would watch Anna Kendrick in just about anything, so I’ll probably catch this at some point, but as for needing to see it at the cinemas? That’ll depend on how much you love the cast… or wedding movies.

Who should see it: Misfits

Going In Style

Rating: M

Starring: Michael Caine, Alan Arkin, Morgan Freeman, Matt Dillon, Joey King

Synopsis: Three senior citizens in their 70s who live together are slowly decaying in endless days with nothing to do but feed the birds. One of them comes up with an idea – rob a bank. They certainly could use the money if they get away with it, and if they are caught, what could happen to three old men?

Trailer:

Why you should care: This falls directly into the Space CowboysLast Vegas, and even Grumpy Old Men category – movies supposedly for the older generation that mostly trade on jokes about being old. I’m totally floored that Freeman, Caine, and Arkin signed on to do this, and even more so that it’s directed by Garden State star/director Zach Braff. The actors will bring their A-game as per usual, but unless you chuckled during that trailer, I’d wait for it to hit DVD or the small screen.

Who should see it: Old pros

Their Finest

Rating: M

Starring: Gemma Arterton, Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy

Synopsis: A British film crew attempts to boost morale during World War II by making a propaganda film after the Blitzkrieg.

Trailer:

Why you should care: Talk about a bait and switch! The first half of the trailer sells a snappy, banter filled romp, before taking an 180-degree turn and trying to tug the heart strings. I don’t know how to feel about that. The cast is top notch, but unless they get the tone exactly right on this, it could come off as either too jokey for the subject matter or too lightweight to earn the emotion.

Who should see it: Blitzing Brits

Raw

Rating: R18+

Starring: Garance Marillier, Ella Rumpf, Rabah Nait Oufella

Synopsis: When a young vegetarian undergoes a carnivorous hazing ritual at vet school, an unbidden taste for meat begins to grow in her.

Trailer:

Why you should care: Shit that looks intense! These are the kinds of left-field concepts that horror die-hards live for, so if you count yourself amongst them, get in line. It got great reviews out of the festival circuit too. Be forewarned though, it is a French movie, so there will be some reading to go along with your buckets of gore.

Who should see it: Carnivorous horror fans

My Pet Dinosaur

Rating: PG

Starring: Jordan Dulieu, Annabel Wolfe, Rowland Holmes

Synopsis: When a young boy named Jake accidentally makes a new friend in an experiment gone wrong a troubled town is plunged into chaos. But with the creature rapidly evolving every day, Jake finds it increasingly difficult to keep his new pet secret. Jake’s friends and new girl Abbie realize they are not the only ones interested in this strange, mischievous little dinosaur and soon discover that the only thing more mysterious than what it is, is who is looking for it.

Why you should care: There’s a real E.T/Stranger Things vibe to this which I dig, but the trailer is pretty poorly constructed and gives away almost all of the movie. I’m impressed that director Matt Drummond has tried something different for an Australian movie, but I’m not sure the money was there to make this one polished enough to compete with the US output. Could be a good diversion for the kids these holidays though.

Who should see it: Dino devotees
