What To Watch This Weekend – Mar 16-19

With so much grabbing for your attention and dollars these days, it’s easy to miss when the latest releases are heading to a cinema near you. So come back every week as we here at So, Is It Any Good? preview the new movies hitting screens, and give you the lowdown on what to watch this weekend.

This weekend, search for A Cure For Wellness, find some Loving, get into the Rough Stuff, or celebrate The Death And Life Of Otto Bloom.

Here’s what to watch!

A Cure For Wellness

Rating: MA15+

Starring: Jason Isaacs, Dane DeHaan, Mia Goth and Adrian Schiller

Synopsis: An ambitious young executive is sent to retrieve his company’s CEO from an idyllic but mysterious “wellness centre” at a remote location in the Swiss Alps. He soon suspects that the spa’s miraculous treatments are not what they seem. When he begins to unravel its terrifying secrets, his sanity is tested, as he finds himself diagnosed with the same curious illness that keeps all the guests here longing for the cure.

OUR VERDICT

Trailer:

Why you should care: Well that’s how you set a mood! The trailer for this is very evocative, and having director Gore Verbinski behind the lens can’t hurt, but I have a real sense that this will be an exercise in style over substance. The fact that we’re getting the movie after the rest of the world means that I have a basis for this, as reviews have not been kind, and the movie has quickly disappeared in the US. Our own reviewer Scott didn’t particularly like it either, so keep that in mind if you’re lining up for a ticket.

Who should see it: Those in need of a cure… for boredom

Loving

Rating: PG

Starring: Ruth Negga, Joel Edgerton, Will Dalton

Synopsis: The story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple, whose challenge of their anti-miscegenation arrest for their marriage in Virginia led to a legal battle that would end at the US Supreme Court.

Trailer:

Why you should care: Based on an incredible true story, Ruth Negga snagged her first Oscar nomination for this role. Joel Edgerton seems to be digging deep too, so I’ve got the feeling that the acting is going to be top notch in this one. It’s a timeless story of love trying to conquer all with an undercurrent of social comment that is still timely (unfortunately).

Who should see it: One for the drama lovers

Rough Stuff

Rating: M

Starring: Gareth Rickards, Vincent Andriano, Sam Glissan, Jamie Kristian, Adam Horner, Katie Garfield, Hayley Sullivan

Synopsis: An environmental activist group charters treasure-seeking Rovers, and their modified four-wheel-drives, for an expedition through remote and treacherous Australian terrain. Tensions rise and ulterior motives are revealed with exciting off-road chases, daring rescues and amazing discoveries to follow.

Trailer:

Why you should care: It’s good to see a wide variety of Aussie stories hitting screens of late, and this one has the added spark of being self-funded through Kickstarter. This treasure hunting adventure tale seems to pack all the things moviegoers like into one movie – guns, explosions, cars, girls, and humour – so it’ll be interesting if the story is there to sustain all that. It might be rough, but it could just have the stuff you need this weekend.

Who should see it: If you like guns, explosions, cars, girls, humour… or all of the above

The Death And Life Of Otto Bloom

Rating: M

Starring: Gareth Rickards, Vincent Andriano, Sam Glissan, Jamie Kristian, Adam Horner, Katie Garfield, Hayley Sullivan

Synopsis: Otto Bloom is experiencing his life in reverse, passing through time backwards while remembering the future. Is he a psychic, a time traveller, a madman or living proof of Einstein’s theory of relativity?

Trailer:

Why you should care: An interesting concept – like a mix between a documentary, Citizen Kane, and The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button – this has the makings of a real noodle-scratcher as you try and get your head around all the time travel business. If you’re in the mood for turning your brain off this weekend probably steer clear, but if you’re in the mood for some brain turning, this could be just the ticket.

Who should see it: Curious cinephiles
