The Universe Is Expanding In The New Trailer For ‘Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets’

Europa has given us another taste of Luc Besson’s latest (and by all accounts, most expensive) space opus, Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets, and I’m getting a real The Fifth Element vibe from the proceedings which can only be a good thing.

Check out the trailer above!

Here’s the official synopsis:

Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner, blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.
Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.

Based on the French graphic novel Valérian and Laureline from writer Pierre Christin and illustrator Jean-Claude Mézières, this one looks to be completely in the Lucy director’s wheelhouse, exploring a fantastical world and really giving his post-production team a workout. I can’t say I’m completely sold on DeHaan and Delevingne in the lead roles, but not knowing the source material, maybe they’re perfect.

Hopefully, this leans more towards the bombastic excess of Fifth Element, and less like the awful campiness of Jupiter Ascending. What do you think of Besson’s latest trip into space? Sound off in the comments below or on our Facebook page.

VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS enters our orbit August 10, 2017.
