The Afterlife Is Real In The First Trailer For ‘The Discovery’

Netflix is killing it right now. Not only do they have loads of fantastic original TV shows, but they are slowly picking up exclusive rights to more and more films. Their latest is The Discovery, check out the abstract teaser trailer by hitting the play button in the header.

Whilst the trailer doesn’t give away too much about the plot, the official synopsis gives you a sense of whats going on:

One year after the existence of the afterlife is scientifically verified, millions around the world have ended their own lives in order to “get there”. A man and woman fall in love while coming to terms with their own tragic pasts and the true nature of the afterlife. Coming to Netflix March 31.

I’m really liking this idea – its unique and original, and the verified afterlife provides a really interesting background for a romantic comedy. I mean, with the state of the world as it is, a verified Afterlife may sound pretty sweet to some people. The trailer looks like it may get a little grisly, but what do you expect when it looks like the suicide rate is in the millions. Directed by Charlie McDowell (The One I Love), The Discovery has quite a stellar cast including Rooney Mara, Jason Segal, Jesse Plemons, Riley Keough and Robert Redford.

The film is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20th before it jumps on Netflix. For me, there is still a stigma behind “straight to video”, but Netflix is looking to break the trend with their original content and from the looks of it The Discovery should provide an interesting and original night of entertainment.

The Discovery hits Netflix worldwide on March 31st.
