SONY PLANS TWO NEW BAD BOYS FILMS

In news that will surely please Martin Lawrence, Sony has revealed its plans to produce not one, but two new Bad Boys films. The news was part of a massive announcement of their future release slate, which also includes a remake of Jumanji (which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary), a Barbie film (as in the doll, not the backyard activity) and the long gestating film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower.

We’ve heard rumours of a possible third outing for detectives Lowrey and Burnett for years, but to have two films announced at once shows massive confidence by Sony in their buddy cop franchise. For me the biggest factor as to whether I can get excited for another Bad Boys film or not is the involvement, or rather un-involvement, of Michael Bay. It sounds as though the producers are keen to give someone else a shot in the directors chair, which would go a long way towards reinvigorating the series and justifying future installments.

As for the other release announcements, getting excited for a film we know nothing about seems a little like walking before you can crawl, but this seems to be the way Hollywood is handling things these days. Its now common practice for big studios to lock in their tent pole releases years in advance, and with Sony planting flags as far as 2019, its clear this game of cinema shotgun is only going to get more competitive as the marketplace gets more crowded.
