Matthew Vaughn To Take The Reins Of ‘Man Of Steel 2’?

Collider is reporting this morning that Warner Bros is in early talks with director Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class) to take over helming duties on the studio’s Superman franchise with Man Of Steel 2.

The sequel has long been rumoured but has been put on the back burner of late so they could focus on establishing their DCEU with the likes of Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, and the in production Justice League and Aquaman. With the entries in the DCEU thus far receiving mixed reactions, DC and Warners have stepped up their efforts to attract top tier talent in order to right the course.

Even though this is early days, the prospect of such a talented director taking the reins of such a big property is tantalising. It obviously wouldn’t be Vaughn’s first foray into superhero tentpoles, and he managed to revitalise the X-Men franchise with First Class, but the prospect of getting a subversive, maybe even slightly comedic take on the Kryptonian warrior is cause for delight. He originally had talks with Warners and pitched a reboot of the character at the same time that Christopher Nolan and David Goyer pitched their (winning) ideas, saying at the time:

“I think that’s the one thing not to do with Superman, trying to do the serious The Dark Knight version. Superman is about color and fun, or it should be, for me.”

A light and fun Superman sounds like a nice change of pace for the increasingly dreary DCEU, which all involved are committed to livening up, akin to the MCU which manages to balance drama with comedic moments easily.

Vaughn is currently in post-production on the highly anticipated sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle, with another spy thriller I Am Pilgrim on tap as well. It’s unclear at this point when Man Of Steel 2 would move into production.
